  • ‘Terra Cotta’ Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

    Tolerates coastal exposure. For use in cottage gardens, perennial beds, cut flowers, in mass. Deer resistant. Foliage height 4-8" tall, flower stalks can reach 3 feet. Aggressiveness/spreading capability depends on climate. In warmer areas, tends to stay abut 12-18"W, but in cold climate (with snow) will spread fairly aggressively 2-3 feet. Can divide every few years if center of the plant is less vigorous or begin to die out.

    Deer Plant (Acmispon glaber) is a perennial subshrub in the Fabaceae (Legume family). The plant is a pioneer species found in dry areas of California, Arizona, and Mexico. It is grows in many habitats, including chaparral, coastal sand, roadsides and other disturbed areas at elevations below 4900 feet.

    Penstemon pseudospectabilis
    Desert Penstemon is native to southwestern United States where it grows in inland deserts and plateaus. It forms a shrub up to 3 feet wide and tall with large, serrated, blue-green foliage, similar to Penstemon spectabilis. Blooms mid to late spring with showy spikes of hot pink flowers that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Plant in full sun in sharply draining soil (preferably rocky or gravelly). While it will survive summer watering, it prefers infrequent to no supplemental irrigation once established.

    A perennial native to the western United States and southern California high deserts, Firecracker Penstemon grows in small mounds of cupped, lanceolate foliage that bear tall spikes of tubular, scarlet red flowers in spring and summer. Needs good drainage and only infrequent to occasional summer water once established. Over-fertilization and heavy organic matter should be avoided. Useful for hot, dry, sunny spots in a desert or rock garden. Its small stature also makes it perfect for gardeners with limited space. Flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. Best if established during the cooler months from October to March.

    Pink Southern Honeysuckle (Lonicera hispidula var. vacillans) A charming selection of our CA native honeysuckle. If you grow honeysuckle-- please grow native! Japanese honeysuckle is an invasive species in our ecosystem. This species is special as well, it's flower shape and leaves are very unique! It's one of the few native vines that we have and it can spread up to 20' wide!

    Salvia leucophylla

    Purple Sage is commonly found growing on dry, rocky slopes and hillsides along the southern California coast. It forms a large, spreading shrub that reaches 3 to 5 all around, sometimes growing even wider in coastal conditions. In spring, it blooms with whorls of pale purple to rose pink flowers on long inflorescences that hummingbirds cherish. Flowers are not typically a true purple color as the common name may imply. New foliage can have hues of green, before turning a soft grey color and then shrinking and turning silver-grey during the summer months. Plant in full sun to light shade inland. Summer deciduous so it should be watered sparingly over the summer (twice per month) or left to go dormant. Provides erosion control on slopes where it can tolerate clay soil. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a more compact form. Flowers attract a variety of insects and butterflies, and seeds provide food for native birds.

    Showy penstemon (Penstemon spectabilis) lives up to its name, being the showiest of the penstemons. It grows fast, reaching 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. This perennial bears spectacular wide-mouthed, tubular violet or purple-blue flowers from its first year on. In good conditions it may flower late winter into summer.

    Rhus ovata, commonly known as sugar bush or sugar sumac, is a shrub or small tree found growing in the canyons and slopes of the chaparral and related ecosystems in Southern California, Arizona, Baja California and Baja California Sur. It is a long lived-plant, up to 100 years, and has dense evergreen foliage that make it conspicuous. It is closely related to and hybridizes with the lemonade sumac.
