Description
Pink Southern Honeysuckle (Lonicera hispidula var. vacillans)
A charming selection of our CA native honeysuckle. If you grow honeysuckle– please grow native! Japanese honeysuckle is an invasive species in our ecosystem. This species is special as well, it’s flower shape and leaves are very unique! It’s one of the few native vines that we have and it can spread up to 20′ wide!
Do take care as this plant can possibly be a host to a disease called “Sudden oak death” so you want to avoid planting if you have oaks on your property or your neighbor’s property. If you do, but want to grow it, it can do well in a container that is large enough. It may need additional protection like being on a porch or other somewhat sheltered area as the roots will be above ground and more susceptible to cold. An alternative for planting under oaks is Catalina Currant, or “island perfume” one of our favorites at FlannelBush Gardens!
